Girls' Empowerment Retreat

Girls' Empowerment Retreat

INSPIRE.
EMPOWER.

The Funo Langa Girls' Empowerment Retreat focuses on engaging secondary school girls on the problems and challenges faced by girls, which are an impediment to their well-being and achieving a better quality of life. The retreat is thus designed to nurture girls, promote their rights, and help them unearth their talents and aspirations. Girls are able to see their role models and envision their dreams as realistic.

Relevance

Mentoring plays a critical role in human development. Research indicates that a well-structured, supervised mentorship program can improve adolescents’ social, emotional, and academic skills and mindsets. Mentorship fosters the development of feelings of connectedness among students for the school and community. In turn, there is less chronic absenteeism, which later translates into less school dropouts. Students have also been seen to develop self-efficacy, self-esteem, and self-confidence from mentorship. Girls’ Education Trust believes that it is vital to provide support for every child’s growth and development to ensure that the girls we are working with grow into healthy, well-rounded, and positive contributing members of society.

Objectives and Results

The objective of the retreat is to bring together girls, their teachers, mentors, and role models across the country to mentor them, share issues of interest among girls and encourage them to work hard, finish school, and aspire for bigger and greater things.

In a broader sense, it is also hoped that this program will result in:

  • Increased motivation and confidence among the girls.
  • Increased ability to articulate their aspirations.
  • Sensitize the community and increase awareness on the need for children especially girls to finish school.
  • Alert the public to the presence of the Trust and the work that they do across Malawi’s rural communities.
